20 interesting facts about Maserati

Starting as a family business, this Italian brand had always been the top of car manufacturer, as far as quality and style are concerned. Maserati cars are embodiment of Italian design and flawless engineering. Graceful car bodies and elegant interiors of those vehicles are made to emphasize the refined taste of its owner. Here are 20 interesting facts about Maserati.

1. Maserati bears the second name of its original creators – Maserati brothers. All six of Maserati brothers (Alfieri, Bindo, Mario, Ernesto, Ettore, and Carlo) were involved in automobile industry at the beginning of the XX th century.

2. In 1926, Alfieri started his own car repair shop in Bologna, from which famous Maserati company had grown. Together with his brothers Ettore, Ernesto and Bindo he was able to construct the very first Maserati racing cars. While driving one of the first Maserati vehicles, Alfieri had won the 1926 Targa Florio open road endurance race.

3. Alfieri’s sixth brother Mario, an artist by profession, came up with the logo for the company – The Trident, which became the emblem of the company and the motor sports team.

4. In 1937, the Maserati brothers had sold their shares in the company to the Adolfo Orsi family. While talented engineers, Maserati were not incredibly good at law, which led to the loss of control over the company. Maserati brothers stayed to work for the company as salaried employees.

5. In 1941, the Orsi family transfers Maserati headquarters from Bologna to Modena, where it remains to this day.

6. During the war Maserati competed with Volkswagen, in particular, with the famous designer Ferdinand Porsche, for the honour to create a vehicle for the Italian dictator Benito Mussolini. While Italian brand had lost to German auto giant, the competition itself was good for Maserati.

7. After the war, company returned to the development and production of exclusive racing cars. Involvement in racing had ended in 1957. Maserati retired from participation in racing as a factory team soon after the Guidizzolo tragedy during the 1957 Mille Miglia, though they continued to build cars for individual enthusiasts.

8. In 1947 Maserati brothers had left Orsi company and found OSKA company. This venture was not very successful.

9. In 1957 Maserati had won their first and last title in most prestigious motorsport event – Formula 1. Argentinean Juan Manuel Fangio had won the championship trophy while driving Maserati 250F.

10. The 1957 was a turning point in history of Maserati. Company became more and more focused on building road-going grand tourers. Maserati 3500 was company’s first ground-up grand tourer design and first series produced car. The 2+2 coupe with aluminium body, equipped with a six-cylinder engine was built under the leadership of chief designer Giulio Alfieri.

11. In 1961 company’s first luxury sedan, the Maserati Quattroporte, was launched.

12. In 1968, the company has undergone big changes – it was sold to Citroën. The cost of the transaction amounted to one billion lire. Under the patronage of the Citroën production of Maserati vehicles had grown, reaching up to 2 cars per day. Maserati model line consisted of coupe Maserati Merak, Maserati Bora, Maserati Khamsin, as well as the luxury sedan Maserati Quattroporte. In turn, Citroën had borrowed Maserati engines for some of their top models. However, quite successful partnership did not last long – it ended in 1975.

13. In 1975, the company was acquired by famous Argentinian constructor and racer Alessandro de Tomaso. The new Maserati model range was introduced in 1976 and included the Maserati Kyalami Driver and the Maserati Quattroporte III.

14. Beginning of the 80’s was marked by arrival of the first car for a broad customer audience – Biturbo. It was equipped with 2-liter engine with a moderate capacity of 180 lit/sec. Relatively reasonable price and low to moderate fuel consumption made the car very popular. Experts believe that Biturbo was the first mass-produced supercar. This experience was subsequently used to create Shamal and Ghibli models, which were presented at the beginning of the 90’s.

15. Following an agreement between De Tomaso and he’s friend Lee Iacocca, who happened to be Chrysler head executive, a joint venture was signed. Maserati would produce a car for export to the American market, the Chrysler TC by Maserati, equipped with a 4-cylinder, 2,2-litre engine.

16. In May 1993, Maserati became a property of the FIAT Group. Significant investments were made by new owner, which led public to believe in Maserati’s revival.

17. In 1999 Maserati 3200 GT was launched. It was a two-door coupe, equipped with a V8 engine with volume of 3.2 litters and turbocharging capacity of 370 lit/sec. The car could go from 0 to 100 km/h in 5 seconds, and has maximum speed of 285 km/h.

18. In 2004, the Maserati company had returned to racing, after a 37 years break, introducing new sports car. Designed and built on the chassis of the Enzo Ferrari, Maserati MC12 – two-seater sports coupe, was created with competition in mind. The model successfully participated in FIA GT Championship, winning the race at the Zhuhai International Circuit, China.

19. In Spring 2016, during Geneva Motor Show, Italian manufacturer showcased its very first crossover – Maserati Levante.

20. In 2013 a new record auction price was set. Luxury red 1955 year Maserati 300S was sold for $ 6 million at Bonhams auction of the Goodwood Festival of Speed. This model is one of the most desirable for collectors, interested in two-seater sports cars of the last century.
